What happens to the money I paid when I posted someone’s bond?

If you posted a bond for someone either at the police department or at the Clerk of Court’s office and that person was given a future court date to appear, that bond will remain open on their case until any fines and costs are assessed. Any bond posted will be applied towards fines, costs, and fees owed by Defendant. If there is any money left over it will be returned to you at the address you provided on the bond form that you signed when you initially paid the bond. Because a bond is posted to secure a Defendant’s appearance for court, if the Defendant fails to appear, the bond you posted will be forfeited and a warrant will be issued for the Defendant’s arrest.
