My water usage is going up. How can I check for leaks?

First, do an overnight meter reading, read your meter at night when everyone goes to bed, do not use any water overnight. Read the meter first thing in the morning, both readings should be the same. Second, put food coloring in the tank of each toilet, if the color goes into the toilet bowl, all by itself without flushing, the flapper at the bottom of the tank is loose and needs to be replaced.
